Scientists of the National Research Technological University "MISiS" with the participation of colleagues from the Siberian Federal University and the " SPC of Magnetic Hydrodynamics "(Krasnoyarsk) have developed a technology for producing a unique heat-resistant aluminum alloy of increased strength, which can replace more expensive and heavy copper conductors in aircraft and in high-speed rail transport. The study is published in the journal Materials Letters.

Researchers have created a method for obtaining a unique heat-resistant high-strength wire. The wire is made of an aluminum alloy, originally cast in the form of a long-length, with a diameter of about 10 mm, billet in an electromagnetic mold.

The authors managed to obtain a thermally stable structure (up to 400 degrees Celsius inclusive), which significantly exceeds the thermal stability of known aluminum alloys that retain their properties up to 250-300 degrees Celsius.

"Previously, alloys with a similar structure were tried to be manufactured using a complex and expensive technology, including ultrafast melt crystallization, the production of granules and subsequent methods of powder metallurgy, "said Nikolai Belov, professor of the Department of Metal Processing by Pressure at NUST MISIS.

The researchers carried out the direct deformation of a long billet-rolling and drawing-without using the traditional homogenization and quenching operations for aluminum alloys.

The key feature of the proposed technology is the casting and annealing modes, which allow us to obtain a structure from thermally stable nanoparticles containing copper, manganese and zirconium.

"We managed to get a high-strength heat-resistant wire from this alloy. Now we are engaged in determining its physical and mechanical properties, and the first results are already very impressive. We plan to patent a method for producing such a wire, " said Torgom Hakobyan, senior researcher at the Department of Metal Processing by Pressure at NUST MISIS.

Heat-resistant high-strength conductors can be used in aircraft and high-speed railway transport instead of significantly more expensive and heavy copper conductors.

According to the authors, the unique and cheap technology may be of interest to manufacturers of deformed semi-finished products made of aluminum alloys.

The main results of the work were obtained with the financial support of the RPF grant No. 20-19-00249.
