In the near future, more than three million children will be among the poor in Europe and Central Asia. This is reported with alarm by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
Today, in Europe and Central Asia, millions of families with children live below the national poverty line. In total - 22 million children and their families. In the near future, approximately 6.4 million more people will join their ranks, including 3.2 million children.
Children with disabilities, children in specialized institutions, refugee and migrant children, as well as children of minorities are in greatest need.
A high-level meeting with parliamentarians from the Europe and Central Asia region was held this week under the auspices of UNICEF.
Its goal is to discuss the problem of such a rapid increase in child poverty in the region during a pandemic and how to protect the rights of children and youth during this difficult period for the region.
“The consequences of COVID-19 are uneven: they have been and will be the most severe and lasting for children who are already in vulnerable situations. School closures, in particular, have widened the gap in access to quality education, leaving many children without institutional support and unable to benefit from digital learning, ”said Afshan Khan, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia. There is an urgent need to tackle these issues and ensure that the needs of children are taken into account in the COVID-19 response, she said.
The regional meeting of parliamentarians was attended by 110 delegates representing national parliaments as well as international and regional parliamentary organizations throughout the Europe and Central Asia region. The event was virtual and focused on the pressing needs of children and young people in the region and the important role that parliamentarians can play in addressing key development issues affecting the lives of the younger generation.
Going forward, UNICEF will create a regional parliamentary platform where legislators can share experiences, exchange knowledge, provide information and accelerate meaningful policy changes and concrete decisions to realize children's rights.
