When it comes to robots designed to move across rough terrain, there are usually models with tracks or legs. However, the new Tready robot combines the best of both approaches by using four tread "fins". This robot, manufactured by HEBI Robotics, is designed for applications such as search and rescue, industrial control or just exploring the area. "Tready is designed for everyone who is interested in a strong and agile mobile robot that moves around different places," the company says. In short, the Tready consists of a central rectangular body with four individually controlled movable legs, each of which has a rotating rubber tread at the end in the form of a step. These steps, called "fins", can remain in a horizontal position when the robot moves on relatively flat ground, moving slightly up and down, following the contours of the terrain. However, if the robot bumps into an obstacle, such as a fallen log or a large rock, it can lift its front flippers to the top of the object, using them to move up and up. He can also go up and down the stairs, as well as stand up if he turns over. In addition, since the robot is IP67 waterproof, it can withstand diving to a depth of up to one meter for half an hour at a time. The Tready robot measures 1100 mm in length and 485 mm in width, weighs 25 kg, has a maximum speed of 0.5 meters per second and should work from two to three hours on a single charge of four (and hot-swappable) lithium batteries. Its built-in Intel NUC mini-computer can be pre-programmed, or the robot can be controlled wirelessly via Wi-Fi using the iOS / Android app. It can also be equipped with peripherals, such as cameras or robotic arms.
